Meet the Yorkshire and Humber team

More than 1,000 students battled it out to qualify for the Yorkshire & Humber region at this year’s National Championships.

Eighteen of the 25 colleges which took part in the regional tournaments will be competing in Nottingham.

Colleges attending Championships: Askham Bryan College, Barnsley College, Bishop Burton College, Franklin College, Greenhead College, Huddersfield New College, John Leggott College, Leeds City College, Leeds College of Building, New College Pontefract, North Lindsey College, Scarborough Sixth Form College, Sheffield College, Shipley College, Thomas Rotherham College, Wakefield College, Wyke Sixth Form College, York College

The sport the region is traditionally successful in: The region has traditionally competed well in women’s hockey and pan-disability football, finishing third and fourth respectively at the National Championships 2018.

One to watch: Millie Oates will be part of the Greenhead College women’s basketball team representing Yorkshire & Humber at the National Championships this year and is definitely a star of the future. Millie currently plays National League Basketball for Sheffield Hatters in the U18 team and at the end of last season broke into the women’s team.

A multi-talented sportswoman, this will be Millie’s second National Championships, having participated in netball last year.

National Championships veteran: Greenhead College’s men’s basketball team and Shipley College’s pan-disability football team will both be returning to Nottingham to represent Yorkshire & Humber, having both competed in 2018. Both teams finished just outside the podium places in fourth position and will be looking to go one better this year.

Shipley College’s pan-disability team are also very familiar with the challenge that waits ahead having competed at the National Championships in 2016, 2017 and 2018.

Greenhead College’s women’s hockey team are also veterans when it comes to the National Championships, having qualified to represent the region every year since 2016. Greenhead College won bronze last year and will be looking to go one further if possible.
