In 2017, the North East region finished in 8th position at the National Championships. We had big success in Table Tennis where we were top of the table and 2nd in the Men’s Squash. We are aiming to come back in 2018 stronger and aim to climb the Wilkinson Sword ladder.

Star athlete: Themba Yabantu from Gateshead College has been identified as a potential star athlete at this year’s National Championships after being a key player in this season’s ABL basketball league. Yabantu, who was named as Player of the Week after leading Gateshead College to victory in Week 14, scored 28 points and added 14 rebounds as Gateshead College overcame top-four side Queen Ethelburga’s 100-88 in February. Head Coach Ian MacLeod said: “Themba is our most consistent performer, hands-down. He contributes in so many ways”.
One to watch: Gateshead Colleges’ basketball team are one to watch at this year’s National Championships, as they once again qualify to represent the North East. At the 2017 Championships, Gateshead College finished 5th overall, and are looking to go one better this year. During the Regional Qualifiers, Gateshead College overcame tough competition from the region before triumphing over Tyne Met College in a highly contested final, which has prepared them well for the National Championships. Star athlete Themba Yabantu is also set to feature for the team.
National Championships veterans: Hartlepool Sixth Form College’s netball team will be returning to the National Championships once again this year, as one of the more experienced teams competing having attended in both 2016 and 2017 to represent the North East. During both the 2016 and 2017 National Championships, Hartlepool Sixth Form College’s Netball Team finished 8th overall and are well accustomed to the tough challenge that lies ahead.
