The South West head to Nottingham for this year’s National Championships with a full complement of athletes, as they look to wrestle the Wilkinson Sword Trophy off their rivals in the South East.
The South West finished second last year and are certainly shaping up to be strong contenders once again, with 10 different colleges from across the region set to be represented in Nottingham.
Last year’s result: 2nd
Colleges representing the region in 2018: Bridgwater College, Exeter College, Petroc, Richard Huish College, South Gloucestershire & Stroud College, Strode College, Truro and Penwith College, Weston College, Yeovil College
Star athlete: Luca Maxwell, Richard Huish College, captain of the men’s Hockey team and plays in the England Hockey rep team.
One to watch: Bridgwater College men’s football team. Won an extremely high quality and competitive regional tournament and will have high hopes at nationals this year with a good crop of players.
National Championships veterans: Weston College LD football team. Have been to the nationals for the last 4 years. Have an excellent pool of players but have never managed to win one of the big medals. Would be great to see them use their experience to good effect and finish in the medals this year.
What they say: Connor Sidley Adams, Richard Huish College. ‘really excited to be heading back to Nottingham again for this year’s nationals. The facilities are exceptional and it will be a great experience for this year’s students. Fingers crossed the South West can regain the sword again this year’.
